Common Mistakes to avoid while preparing for IAS exam | Ghaziabad IAS Academy | 8851330108

It is human instinct to commit errors. Be that as it may, monotonous mix-ups, particularly in UPSC arrangement will influence your planning procedure. Do whatever it takes not to submit any errors in light of the fact that UPSC tests is a serious test and each misstep you make is a preferred position for another applicant.

On the bright side, these basic errors can be maintained a strategic distance from effectively and carry you closer to your objective to expert UPSC Exam.

Here is a rundown of regular mix-ups made by IAS aspirants during their preparation time. Stay away from all these Mistakes.

Not understanding the demands of UPSC syllabus

  • It is one of the most well-known and easily fixable errors made by UPSC aspirants. Most students begin start preparing for civil services exam without a complete understanding of UPSC syllabus and lack of knowledge of the exam pattern.
  • Students must know about the UPSC syllabus and exam patterns.  They should examine it back to front and keep a duplicate of it with them generally. When aspirants know about syllabus topics, they can easily keep track of topics that need to be covered recognizing their own qualities and weakness while doing likewise.

Equal importance to all topics

  • Most aspirants don't give equal importance to the all the topics provided in the syllabus, rather they read more on selected topics or so called important topics prescribed by experts or read more on topics which he/she is interested to read.
  • Aspirants should develop a habit of giving equal importance to all topics since it is a competitive examination UPSC may quiz you on any topic. It is better to be prepared with all topics.
  • It is said that in UPSC preparation aspirants should know something about everything so that they can handle any kind of question in the UPSC Prelims and Mains exam.

Avoid referring to different materials for one topic/subject

  • Another common mistake made by UPSC aspirants is that they refer to different books for the same subject. But remember, in the end, you won’t be able to recall properly because of the amount of material you have tried to absorb.
  • It is advised to follow one standard text book for each subject and stick to that book. Revise as many time as possible. It will only do you good.

Preparing randomly without a study plan

  • Another common mistake that UPSC aspirants make is that they don t have a proper study plan. They read randomly without any proper preparation strategy which hampers their preparation.
  • Aspirants should develop a proper study plan like short-term study plan weekly, monthly and also long term one-year study plan. So, by way of planning their study, it helps aspirants keeping track on topics that they have covered and topics that need to be covered or revised.

Inclusive preparation strategy

  • Another common mistake made by UPSC aspirants is that they prepare for civil services exam in an isolated manner. For example, they prepare for prelims first and after prelims exam start their mains preparation. Finally, if they qualify for the interview then they start preparation for that. Aspirants must prepare comprehensively and not one by one.

Avoiding NCERT Text Books

  • Many aspirants avoid reading NCERT books and refer to other text books or market material. Avoid doing that as NCERT books are a must. UPSC prelims and Mains questions are asked based on NCERT text books.

Not solving Previous Year Question Papers

  • Every year UPSC repeats few previous year questions in both prelims and at times in Mains examination also. UPSC aspirants are advised to go through at least 3 to 5 years previous question papers and if possible 10 years question paper to improve and get a very good idea about the question paper and the kind of questions asked.

Reading newspaper whole day

  • Newspaper reading is an important aspect in the UPSC civil service preparation, but one should not read a newspaper for long hours. IAS preparation also has other important aspects like GS, Essay topics and optional subjects etc. So, aspirants are advised to read their daily newspaper for one hour at least. Also, stick to one newspaper only.

Not taking notes regularly

  • Students read all day and night without making any notes for their revision! It is one of the most common mistakes and a big one too that should be avoided by IAS aspirants. Candidates should develop a habit of daily note making to improve their chances of qualifying the exam and you would really need your notes during revision.

Avoid too much of discussion with friends

  • It is always good to discuss preparation with your peers. Be surrounded by positive and optimistic people instead of pessimists who will make you feel like you are not doing enough.

Revision planning

  • Aspirants go on reading till the exam without any revision plan. It is one of the biggest mistakes made by UPSC aspirants. Before appearing for UPSC Exam, candidates should at least revise their material and notes twice or more.

Optional Subject

  • Not giving importance to the optional subject and focusing only on GS syllabus is another common mistake made by UPSC aspirants. Students should give equal importance to both GS subjects and Optional Subjects.

Essay writing

  • Many aspirants don’t practice essay writing for their mains examination and are not aware of the importance of Essay writing in Mains. The Essay paper plays a crucial role in mains examination and it also determines candidate s chances of qualifying further not. Students are advised to write one essay topic weekly to improve their essay writing.

Online traps

  • Aspirants spend too much time on online websites and forget to focus on their study plans and strategy. Students can refer to online websites but should avoid spending too much time on online resources.

  • As we stated earlier it is human to make mistakes but what is important is that lessons are learnt from those mistakes and they are avoided in the future.

Essay Writing tips for UPSC :An insight into essay writing for UPSC | Get Guidance for IAS Exam | Ghaziabad IAS Academy | 9899781744 |

Writing is the best form of portrayal of your knowledge. And our UPSC loves  this form of intellect expression. So, every Civil Services aspirant must know how to write properly. Writing includes two parts: Answer writing for IAS Exam and Essay writing for UPSC . Answer writing for UPSC  demands a proper written presentation of your information on the given question. And henceforth, answer writing is not a tedious job as such. If you have prepared well, you can write your answers properly. But, essay writing for IAS Exam  can be tricky. Even though you  might have enough information on the given topic, but still  you can face difficulty in this, if you don’t know what to include and what to not. Time constraint and word limit, are the two key factors to be kept in mind.

The question is, how to write a somewhat perfect essay? That too in stipulated time. Well, it is simple. The only thing which you need to do is practice and write as many essays as many you can. You need to follow a basic format, which would include an introduction, a main body and an effective conclusion. Usually the introduction part should begin with an appropriate anecdote or quote, along with the author’s name. The quote should be relevant to your given topic. You can even use a short story or an abstract. Facts  and figures can also be included in this. But these facts must be accurate. Entail clearly what your essay is going to be all about. You can also involve current events or include the background literature related to the topic. The main body should be coherent and logical. You can include historical events or facts, in this too. Laws and administrative policies related to the topic should also be incorporated. If you are presenting arguments or debates, then support it with proper    examples. Cover all the social, political, geographical, economical and  scientific aspects or dimensions of the topic. The main body should be elaborative and should clearly portray what you want to express. In conclusion part, include your ideas, opinions, suggestions or reforms into this section of essay. Summarise the topic. In a nutshell, show a way ahead for development, reforms or positive future. End on a positive note.
This was how to write an essay for UPSC . Now, let us have a look at the DO’s and DON’Ts of essay writing.
   DO’s
  1. After reading the essay question, sketch out a rough draft.
  2. Frame out what to include in the essay and how.
  3. Fit your information into  the essay format, keeping all the points in mind.
  4. Take care of your hand-writing and the alignment of writing.
  5. Write essay in such a way, that you don’t run out of time.
  6. Your conclusion should related with the introductory part.
  7. Transition from one section to another of an essay, should be smooth. Use connectors like moreover, maybe, but, and, now, henceforth etc.
  8. Take care of your vocabulary, tenses and grammar, while writing essay.
  9. Revise your essay at least once or twice, as time allows you.
DON’Ts
  1. Do not be judgemental regarding government, political parties or any institution like religion, marriage, caste etc. Do not pin point any one and hold them guilty.
  2. Do not show bias attitude in your essay. Try to neutralize.
  3. Avoid use of words like must/should as you cannot be authoritative to the government. Instead use words like can or could.
  4. Avoid use of abbreviations, jargons or slangs. If you are using abbreviations, then mention their full-forms also.
  5. Avoid repetition of ideas, thoughts and words.

You can follow a time-slot for each important step of essay writing. This would provide you with an effective time-management. For example,
Topic selection: 10 minutes, Recalling: 10-15 minutes, Formulating structure : 10 minutes, Essay- writing: 1 hour and Revision: 5 minutes.
Essay writing is a skill which you can improve only by more and more practice. Follow the above steps judiciously and you will notice the difference.
Union Public Service Commission(UPSC) has kept a separate paper for Essay with a motive to test the intellect, creativity and view point of the candidate. Do read a lot of editorial columns of newspapers or from online platforms. This will provide you multiple viewpoints to a topic.
All the best for your exam! Hope you crack this prestigious examination and  become an IAS officer.
